Find a job in the catering industry
Restaurants have been hit by the recession, no doubt, but good well established
restaurants
that are embedded into their geography will always keep their customers that can
afford to eat out. This is why it’s so important if you have good skills maybe a sous chef or pastry chef you
should look for a job in a recession proof part of the restaurant or catering industry.
A shortage of good sous chefs or pastry chefs?
If you own a restaurant it’s hard to find good staff that meet your standards and that ar
e reliable and committed. This is why in a
recession or depression the good strong people that have good skills and motivation win big, and the weaker
people end up on the dole watching daytime TV.
A kitchen requires discipline and organisation to work, especially if it’s under staffed or suffers with big
peaks in demand. It’s important to be multi skilled and be willing to relocate to one of the big cities like
Birmingham or London. London has its own economy according to many people, completely separate from the rest of the
country. OK the wages for people that work in kitchens and restaurants are higher, but the living costs are higher
too. A good sous chef should have skills that overlap into roles like Sauté Chef, Fish Chef, Roast Chef, Grill Chef
and pantry chef. Exposure to these additional skills will help the job search significantly. Birmingham needs good
people to work in the catering business just as much as London does, just with different wages.
